The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has signed an agreement with a private company for a MVR 3.1 million project to construct a mosque in Thaa Gaadhiffushi.
The ministry said today that the project, awarded to Speed Construction Private Limited, will be financed by donations and the Mosque Fund registered at the ministry.
The agreement between the ministry and Speed Construction was signed last Wednesday.
The mosque will have a capacity of 304 people and construction must be completed by the end of April 2014, said the Ministry of Islamic Affairs.
The men’s mosque in Gaadhiffushi has been closed since 2009, and men have since then been praying at the women’s mosque.
The government decided to build a mosque in the island, which has a population of 675, because the current mosque is overcrowded and has fallen into disrepair.
