Leader of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) Ahmed Thasmeen Ali has resigned as leader of the party today.
Deputy leader of DRP Rozaina Adam has confirmed Thasmeen’s resignation. However, she did not mention the reason behind the resignation. Thasmeen tendered his resignation at the ongoing DRP council meeting.
Some senior members of DRP, including Rozaina, have already announced that they will moved to the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). Rozaina published a tweet on Saturday that she has decided to sign for MDP to "work for democracy, human rights, against torture & against a dictatorship."
In a tweet on Sunday, Thasmeen said he is proud to have supported MDP presidential candidate, former president Mohamed Nasheed and that the future lies with MDP.
Thasmeen ran alongside Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik as his running mate in the first round of the annulled presidential election. He decided to back MDP for the fresh election following Dr Waheed’s bitter defeat, where they acquired just 5 percent of the vote.
