President welcomes Maldives

President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has welcomed the Maldives' re-election to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for a second consecutive term.

According to the President's Office, the President also expressed appreciation to the staffs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Permanent Mission of Maldives to the United Nations, Permanent Mission of the Maldives in Geneva, and other embassies for their work in securing the seat for the Maldives.

The election was held on 12 November at the United Nations General Assembly and the Maldives was re-elected to the UNHRC with 164 votes. The Maldives will commence serving its second consecutive term at the Council from 2014.

The UNHRC is a 47-seat, inter-governmental subsidiary body of the United Nations General Assembly and one of the most prominent institutions in the United Nations mechanism.

The Maldives was first elected to the Council seat in 2010.
