The Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) will meet in Colombo today (Wednesday) to discuss recent developments in the Maldives, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Kamalesh Sharma has said.
According to The Hindhu, Kamalesh Sharma said responding to a query on the Commonwealth’s position on the Maldivian presidential elections, that a constitutional void exists in the Maldives.
“I hope this will be addressed at a later point,” he said.
Having failed to elect a president by the constitutional deadline for the end of the presidential term, 11 November, Maldives remains derived of an elected president. However, continuing president Dr Mohamed Waheed, supported by a Supreme Court ruling, holds the government in place.
Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma said the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group would "take an appropriate decision" today.
