Jumhooree Party (JP) has decided that it will not support any presidential candidate in the second round of the presidential election.
A council member of JP confirmed to Sun Online moments ago that its council has passed with high majority votes, to not form any coalitions.
This decision by JP follows defeat in the first round of the presidential election held yesterday for its presidential candidate Gasim Ibrahim.
The two candidates who moved to the second round are presidential candidate of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) former President Mohamed Nasheed, and presidential candidate of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Abdulla Yameen.
Both these candidates have implied that they want to form coalitions with JP.
PPM has said that it has been holding discussions with JP ever since the results for the first round were announced.
MDP’s candidate Nasheed, meanwhile, said at a press conference held today that it is important to hold discussions with Gasim ahead of the second round.
JP has not yet formally announced its decision to not form any coalition for the second round, but said that this decision will be announced by its leader Gasim Ibrahim at 8:00 p.m. tonight.
