Adhaalath Party decides to back PPM in second round

Adhaalath Party has decided to support Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) in the second round of the presidential election.

Adhaalath Party, which formed a coalition with Jumhooree Party (JP) for the first round of the presidential election, said that the purpose of its decision to support PPM is to protect national interests.

Speaking at a press conference held today, President of Adhaalath Party Imran Abdulla said, “The council of Adhaalath Party has decided that it should work with the presidential candidate of PPM in order to protect the most important of national interests, our religion, independence and sovereignty. We have therefore decided to support Abdulla Yameen, and to work with his party and his team in the second round.”

Imran said that this decision was made after discussion with other parties included in the Jumhooree Coalition.

Speaking at the press conference, Adhaalath Party Spokesperson Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed stressed the importance of working towards saving the country from the current challenges it faces, and urged all supporters of Adhaalath Party to vote for Yameen.

“The country is facing serious challenges. We need a strong, stable government, which can strengthen the legal system and ensure prosperity and peace for the country. All citizens of the Maldives have to work together to achieve this,” he said.

Dr Shaheem said that Adhaalath Party did not set any conditions when deciding to support PPM.

“We believe we can work with PPM. Our general and national ideologies are very similar, and we believe we can solve problems through dialogue,” he said.

Adhaalath Party also called on all Maldivian citizens, members of Adhaalath Party, and all scholars to work with honesty for the betterment of the nation.
