Dr Hassan Saeed decides to step away from politics

Dr Hassan Saeed, running mate for Jumhoory Party’s (JP) Presidential candidate, has decided to resign as the president of his own Dhivehi Qaumee Party and step away from politics.

Dr Hassan Saeed’s decision follows JP candidate Gasim Ibrahim’s defeat in the re-run of the first round of the presidential election yesterday, where he ended up in last place amongst the three contenders. Gasim gained 48,131 votes (23.34 percent).

The JP candidate received 2291 less votes compared to the initial first round of the election held on 7 September, where he gained 50,422 votes (24.07 percent).

The 7 September election was annulled by the Supreme Court over a case filed by JP citing election fraud.
