Dr. Afrasheem Ali, MP for Ungoofaaru constituency in the People’s Majlis, today proposed a resolution to the People’s Majlis, by which the Noble Qur’an would become a compulsory subject for primary and secondary students in the country. The resolution proposed the Majlis to determine the Noble Qur’an as a mandatory subject under the national curriculum.
While introducing the resolution, Dr. Afrasheem Ali said that Noble Qur’an had to be included in the national curriculum as a compulsory subject, in order to familiarize students with the teachings of the Holy Book, and to spread Qur’anic knowledge throughout the society. He also said that it was essential to teach students how to recite Noble Qur’an in accord with the rules of recitation.
“Teaching the Noble Qur’an to all Maldivian children, spreading Qur’anic knowledge in the society and nurturing our young generations in accordance with the teachings of the Book is necessary. As such I propose this Majlis to make a decision stating that the Noble Qur’an should be considered by the national curriculum as a compulsory subject, under Article 10(a), Article 142 and Article 144 of the Constitution”, said Dr. Afrasheem.
When debate was opened following the introduction of the resolution, many MPs, including members of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the opposition spoke in support of the resolution.
Ahmed Sameer, Vice President of MDP parliamentary group, said that making the Noble Qur’an a compulsory subject in the national curriculum would bring much benefit to all the people in the country. He said that the Qur’an’s moral teachings needed to be taught in the schools.
