Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has acknowledged that the final Voters’ List compiled by the Elections Commission for the first round of the presidential election scheduled for 9 November is not error-free, but said that it will endorse the list anyway.
MDP said this in a statement issued today.
MDP said that the percentage of error in the list is 0.04, which is low even according to international standards.
MDP said that it will accept the list and endorse it, and that it hopes to proceed with the presidential election.
MDP noted six problems with the Voters’ List, including the reduction in the number of eligible voters when compared with the list used on 7 September.
Elections Commission said that the number of eligible voters for the election on 7 September was 239,539, while the number of eligible voters for the election on 9 November is 239,105 – a reduction of 488 voters.
MDP noted that 2,304 identity cards were added to the list to be used on 9 November, while 2,792 identity cards were removed from the list used on 7 September.
MDP said that while 2,304 identity cards were added to the list, the number of people who turned 18 between 7 September and 9 November is 1,336, meaning that there is no explanation for the addition of 968 names to the list.
