Number of eligible voters is 239,105, says EC

The Elections Commission (EC) has said that the number of eligible voters for the election scheduled for 9 November is 239,105.

Speaking at a press conference last night, EC Member Ali Mohamed Manik said that the number of eligible voters for the first round is 239,105, and if a second round is held on 16 November, the number of eligible voters for the second round would be 239,241.

The General Election Regulation states that ballot papers must be printed one for each eligible voter, plus one percent of the total number of eligible voters.

Head of Registration Section of Elections Commission Aminath Majdha said that 219 complaints were received regarding the voters’ list, which included 93 complaints regarding the locations where people are registered to vote, and 126 complaints regarding problems with names, and the inclusion of names of dead persons on the list.

Majdha said that Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) requested to verify fingerprints on 6,000 forms, however, PPM filed this request after the commission had sent the forms to the Department of National Registration (DNR) for fingerprint verification. She said that PPM has been informed via a letter that it is thus not possible to verify those fingerprints.
