PG asked to submit defence in writing

The Independent Institutions Committee has asked Prosecutor General Ahmed Muizzu to submit his defence in relation to the no-confidence motion against him, in writing.

The no-confidence motion against Muizzu was filed by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

The decision to ask Muizzu to submit his defence in writing was passed by the committee today, after MDP was accused by MPs of other parties, of conducting the meeting against the regulation.

Muizzu was asked to attend the committee meeting today to present his defence, but was not allowed into the room due to disorderly conduct by the MPs.

MPs who opposed continuing the committee meeting regarding the no-confidence motion against Muizzu argued that the committee included MPs against whom the State has pressed charges, resulting in conflict of interest.

At today’s committee meeting, Gemanafushi MP Ilham Ahmed played songs in high volume on his phone, while Vilufushi MP Riyaz Rasheed banged a tray on the desks, to make noise.

Due to the lack of a suitable environment to invite Muizzu to the meeting, Muizzu was asked to submit his defence in writing by 9:00 p.m. today.

Muizzu was first summoned to the committee to present his defence on this case last Thursday, following which he requested to be given time to prepare his defence. He was given three days to prepare his defence, and summoned to today’s meeting.
