Presidential candidate of Jumhooree Party (JP) Gasim Ibrahim has said that the Elections Commission (EC) does not want to elect a president by holding an election.
Gasim made this remark while speaking at a press conference held at M. Kunooz today.
“I would like to say, that judging by the actions of Elections Commission’s Fuad Thaufeeg and his group, that is, the vice president and the other members of the commission, it’s really hard to believe that they want to elect a president by holding a fair election. Their behaviour seems to suggest that they want to select a particular person as president. This is very sad,” he said.
Gasim criticised Elections Commission for accepting re-registration forms which had fingerprints that looked like ‘ink blots’.
“Neither MDP nor Elections Commission want to hold the election. I think Elections Commission does what MDP asks them to do. From what I hear, they follow the orders of Mohamed Nasheed,” he said.
He said that he is prepared to sign the voters’ list, provided that it is fraud-free.
Gasim also said that Elections Commission’s aim now is to hold the election after presidential powers are handed over to Speaker of Parliament Abdulla Shahid.
