Parliament tables no-confidence motion against Speaker and Deputy Speaker

Parliament has scheduled a motion of no confidence against Speaker of the Parliament Abdulla Shahid and Deputy Speaker Mohamed Nazim for 20th and 19th of November.

Secretary General of the Parliament Ahmed Mohamed said today that the motion against Shahid has been tabled for 20 November, and the motion against Nazim for 19 November. Both MPs have been notified, Ahmed Mohamed said.

The no-confidence motion against Speaker Abdulla Shahid was presented to the parliament with 15 signature from MPs of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Jumhoory Party (JP), Maldives Development Allaiance (MDA) and Adhaalath Party, where they have described the Speaker’s conduct of the parliament as unlawful.

The motion against Deputy Speaker Mohamed Nazim was presented with 35 signatures of MPs from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP). The MPs have accused Nazim of abusing his power of office to gain undue advantages to certain parties and of being biased in the conduct of parliament sessions.
