Parliament has approved Mohamed Haleem as the new Sergeant at Arms of the parliament.
The law enforcement officer for the Parliament, Sergeant of Arms is required to keep order during sessions under the directions of the Speaker of the Parliament.
Fourty year old Mohamed Haleem left the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) at the rank of First Lieutenant and has 24 years of military service.
Parliament announced for a Sergeant at Arms on 25 October, which received 9 applications. The Parliament General Purposes Committee evaluated and shortlisted the list to 3 candidates, where Mohamed Haleem received the most score with 68 points.
The parliament in session today approved Haleem with 56 votes in favour, out of a total of 57 MPs present.
The other two candidates, who’s names did not go to vote after Haleem was approved through the first round are; Mohamed Nashid of M. Manafdhoo and Hussain Salah of M. Merryhiya.
Following the vote, Speaker Abdulla Shahid declared that Mohamed Haleem has been appointed as the new Sergeant at Arms.
The position holds a monthly salary of MVR 32,000.
