The country's national airline Maldivian has said they will receive a 16-seat capacity seaplane by December this year, which will facilitate to commence their new seaplane venture.
Managing Director Abdul Haris said they will commence the operation with a single Twin Otter seaplane at the end of this year.
“We don't believe a single company holding monopoly over the seaplane service is very healthy. There is nothing that can be done, even if they increase prices, or cease their operation altogether. I believe the national carrier must step forward, to induce a competitive market for the service.”
“The fleet will be slowly expanded. We’ve already started work on this. I believe it will better please the tourists who arrive in the Maldives. It will also bring development to the industry.”
“Tourists are our main target because they currently utilize this service. We will try to balance the price, make it agreeable for both sides,” Haris said.
He said the company has received a 1,400 square feet plot of land on the Southeastern side of the airport island, Hulhule’. The company is currently drawing up designs for floating jetties and terminals, he said
“Our target is to commence operations in December,” Haris said.
Earlier this year, American corporate giant Black Stone Group acquired majority shares and subsequently merged the country's two sole seaplane operators.
