A motorcycle owned by Haa Alif Kelaa council member Adam Assad was torched late Saturday night.
Assad told Sun that the motorcycle was set on fire while parked inside his house, Sabudhelige. The vehicles was burned to rubble, he said.
“I bought the cycle, a Wave 125S, quite recently. The cycle is parked on the house veranda. My mother woke up late at night to the smell of burning rubber. She looked outside and the cycle was drenched with petrol and set on fire. Fire has damaged the veranda roof and also part of the adjoining toilet was burned,” Assad said.
Assad said he has recently received several death threats. The motorcycle was set on fire between 2:30 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. and the police were promptly notified, he said. Adam Assad is a member of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
“It’s been three weeks since a group has been threatening to kill me. I was near the harbour with a a friend about two nights ago when a group came up to me and said they will set fire to my cycle and hurt me if they find me alone. They threatened me, and I’ve shared this with the authorities,” Assad said.
Police media official confirmed the arson attack. He said the police are investigating the case.
Adam Assad is the only PPM member in Haa Alif Kelaa island council.
