Police and protesters clash in Addu City

Confrontations were seen between Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) protesters and police in Addu City link road tonight.

The clashes occurred after the police tried to move protesters from the street, who were blocking the link road causeway that connects Maradhoo and Feydhoo.

Sun’s journalist in Addu City reports that the police started using force to dismantle the crowd after protesters threw stones at the police. She said the police are now clearing the road of obstructions set up by protesters and arresting those who interfere with the task.

South Police Division Chief Inspector Ahmed Shifan told Sun that they have opened the link road after protesters blocked the Maradhoo-Feydhoo causeway with sacks of aggregate. Protesters were arrested in the process, he confirmed, although it was difficult to provide numbers at this point, Shifan said.

The Chief Inspector described the incident as "a minor hindrance" and said the link road has now been opened for traffic.
