Number of people who re-registered increases by 14 percent

The number of people who re-registered for the first round re-run of the presidential election scheduled for 19 October has increased by 14.5 percent when compared with the number of people who re-registered for the first round held on 7 September.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday night, Member of Elections Commission (EC) Ali Mohamed Manik said that the number of people who re-registered increased from 62,000 last time, to 71,000 this time.

Re-registration was opened for 24 hours on Thursday last week, and the processing of all re-registration took longer than expected and was completed yesterday (Thursday).

President of EC Fuad Thaufeeg said that once re-registration was completed, efforts began to announce the list to ensure the validity of the forms.

EC estimates the total number of eligible voters to be around 239,000 this time.
