India appeals for peace and calm in the Maldives ahead of fresh elections

India has appealed to all sides in the Maldives to maintain peace and as the country readies for fresh presidential elections on Saturday.

In a statement released on Thursday, India’s Ministry of External Affairs urged to ensure that the fresh elections dates stipulated in the Supreme Court verdict are adhered to, so that a new President is elected in accordance with the wishes and democratic aspirations of the people of Maldives.

“We deplore the recent incidents of political violence and appeal to all sides to maintain peace and calm and to refrain from extra-constitutional measures.”

“As a close friend and neighbour, India has consistently supported the strengthening of democratic processes and institutions in Maldives,” the statement by the Indian External Ministry read.

Maldives is gearing up for fresh presidential elections after the Supreme Court annulled the first round of the presidential elections held on 7th September. Announcing the annulment verdict on 7th October, the Supreme Court has issued strict dates and guidelines for the electoral process, and for polling to be held before the 20th of October. The Elections Commission has since announced fresh elections for 19th October.
