The Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has said that the current members of the Elections Commission (EC), who are responsible for the problems behind the annulment of the first round election result, are not capable of holding a fair election.
Vice President of PPM Abdul Raheem Abdulla made this remark at a press conference held by the party at Nasandhura Palace Hotel this afternoon.
“PPM does not want to hold the election with the current members of the Elections Commission, because the Supreme Court verdict has proved that they are not capable of holding a fair election,” said Abdul Raheem Abdulla.
He went on to say that President of EC Fuad Thaufeeg and Vice President of EC Ahmed Fayaz Hassan would do everything possible to ensure that Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) wins the election.
He noted that Fuad challenged the Supreme Court order to delay the second round of the presidential election, and tried to hold it anyway on the scheduled date, and said that Fuad should be prosecuted for this.
He repeated that therefore, the imminent presidential election, organised by the current members of the EC, will not be fair.
Deputy Leader of Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), Kudahuvadhoo MP Ahmed Amir said at the press conference that he does not believe that the EC is complying with the Supreme Court order to hold a re-run of the first round of the presidential election.
He called on the public not to follow decisions made by the EC that violate the Supreme Court order, and also called for the immediate resignation of the current members of the EC.
Amir said that it would not be possible to hold a fair election within the timeframe stated in the Supreme Court order. He said that it was irresponsible of the EC to give just one day for re-registration, and criticised the EC for not requesting the court to extend the timeframe.
