Customs collects MVR 1.12 billion as import duty revenue

The Maldives Customs Service has said that over MVR 1.12 billion was received as import duty by 30 September 2013.

Customs said that this is a 9.5 percent increase when compared to import duty collection at the end of September 2012, which stood at MVR 1.02 billion.

Statistics show that exports increased by 13.8 per cent during the first three quarters of 2013. The total exports at the end of September 2013 was MVR 1.93 billion, which was some MVR 200 million more than the first three quarters in 2012.

Customs said that imports also showed a 13 per cent increase at the end of September 2013 when compared to the same period in 2012. Out of the MVR 19.64 billion imported so far this year, over MVR 3.4 billion were imported to tourism sector, MVR 10.03 billion by other private enterprises and over MVR 5.9 billion by public companies.
