The police have decided to propose to the Elections Commission (EC) and other relevant state institutions to take action against Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), for using wooden sticks to assault and intimidate police officers at the MDP protest held in Male’ last night.
Speaking at a press conference held at Iskandar Building today, Superintendent of Police Abdulla Nawaz said that the illegal activities carried out by MDP at last night’s protest are under investigation by a police team of lawyers, and upon completion of this investigation, the relevant institutions will be advised to take action against MDP.
Nawaz said that the police do not count last night’s protest as peaceful, and strongly condemned the violence and attacks on police officers.
He said that the police discovered wooden sticks and packets of chili mixed with water in a pick-up truck at the protest area.
He further informed that two police officers, one who was assaulted in the leg with a wooden stick and another who was attacked in the face with a chili-water packet, had to be treated at the hospital.
Nawaz said that one protester arrested during the protest last night tested positive for hash.
