President’s Office has stated that the meeting between President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik and former president Mohamed Nasheed on Wednesday night was mainly focused on the presidential elections.

President’s office stated that at the meeting, President Nasheed expressed concern over the delay in declaring a date for the second round of the elections.

The office said that the President expressed hope that the Supreme Court would issue a ruling on the matter soon and assured that he would ensure a smooth transfer of power to the winning candidate.

The President was also hopeful that a peaceful and democratic election would be held in the Maldives soon, and calm and harmony would prevail in the country.

The meeting, which lasted about 20 minutes, took place at Muleeaage. Nasheed was the first to exit Muleeaage after the meeting and refused to respond to reporters’ questions, as did Waheed, who exited about two minutes later.

This is the first meeting between former president Mohamed Nasheed and President Mohamed Waheed after the controversial change of power on 7th February 2012, after which Nasheed had accused Waheed, who was vice president at the time, of staging a coup d’état to take over the presidency.
