Narudhoo ballot box will not be recounted, decides EC

The Elections Commission has decided not to recount the ballot box placed in Shaviyani Narudhoo, despite the advice of the commission’s National Complaints Bureau.

Sun Online has come to know that the National Complaints Bureau advised to recount the ballot box in Narudhoo after receiving a complaint claiming that several valid votes cast into this ballot box were counted as invalid.

Secretary General of the EC Asim Abdul Sattar told Sun Online today that the commission decided not to recount the votes because the complaint is not one that will change the final result of the election.

Only one ballot box was placed in Narudhoo for the first round of the presidential election. Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) presidential candidate Mohamed Nasheed gained 117 votes, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) presidential candidate Abdulla Yameen gained 102 votes, Jumhooree Party (JP) presidential candidate Gasim Ibrahim received 64 votes, and President Dr Mohamed Waheed received 3 votes.

A total of 306 people had registered to vote in Narudhoo, and there were 20 invalid votes in the ballot box.
