The US has called on the Maldives to respect the rule of law, in relation to the Supreme Court's ruling to delay the second round of presidential elections.
This came in a statement by the United States Embassy Sri Lanka and the Maldives, issued today, which reads:
“We note the Maldivian Supreme Court's ruling to delay the second round of presidential elections, scheduled for September 28, as the Justices continue to hear arguments. While this judicial process moves forward, we encourage all political parties to work together peacefully and ensure that the democratic process can continue in a way that respects the rule of law and that represents the will of the Maldivian people.”
