MP Hamid denies possession of alcohol charges

Henveyru-South MP Hamid Abdul Gafoor has denied the possession of alcohol charges against him, in relation to his arrest from Haa Dhaalu Hondaidhoo last November.

When the court asked MP Hamid how he pleads, the MP’s lawyer stated that they received the details of his indictment today and that they need more time to review the case.

However, the judge stated that the defendant had been allowed enough time to prepare his plea and that the he will not grant any more opportunities.

MP Hamid then told the court that he denies the charges.

“The court’s principles are, [if the defendant] accept the charges, he will get the lighter sentence. But if the defendant denies the charges, and charges are proven by testimony, he will get the heavier sentence,” the judge said.

Concluding today’s hearing, the judge said that he will allow both sides to submit evidence during the next hearing and hear witness statements afterwards.

State has raised charges against MP Hamid Abdul Gafoor for possession of alcohol in Haa Dhaalu Hondaidhoo on 16th November last year.

During the inspection of the island, police discovered three men, including MP Hamid Abdul Gafoor and MP Abdulla Jabir, seated inside a hut on the northern side of the island. According to the police, upon their approach, MP Hamid had thrown away his drinking mug, which the police suspect to have contained alcohol.
