I will be sworn in as president on 11 November: Gasim Ibrahim

President of Jumhooree Party (JP) Gasim Ibrahim has said that he would be the one sworn in as president on 11 November.

“God willing, Gasim Ibrahim would be the one sworn in as the president of the Maldives on 11 November,” he said, while speaking at a JP rally last night.

Gasim said that he will “never forgive the Elections Commission for this crime”.

Gasim, who obtained 24 percent of votes in the first round of the presidential election, said that 20,000 votes were cast illegally.

He also claimed that more than 70,000 people voted for him.

He said that efforts were under way to address this problem through a court process, and that he was confident that the matter will be settled in JP’s favour.

At last night’s rally, supporters of JP called for the resignation of President of Elections Commission Fuad Thaufeeg.

JP held a protest on Saturday night, where protesters claimed that 10,000 extra votes were cast illegally, including votes cast in the names of dead people.

Gasim obtained 50,422 votes or 24 percent in the first round of the presidential election held on Saturday.
