President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has said that he will complete his term and remain in office until the next president takes oath on 11th November.
Speaking to Sun today, Presidents Office Spokesperson Massood Imad said that the President attended office today and carried out his routine work. He said that President Waheed will return to his private life once he hands over the presidency to the next president on 11th November, when the next president takes his oath of office.
Having secured just 5.13 percent (10,750 votes) and ending up in last place of all four candidates, President Waheed faced a bitter defeat in the first round of presidential polls last Satruday.
The president managed to secure a majority in a few islands including Haa Dhaalu Hirimaradhoo, Shaviyani Kanditheemu and from one box in Haa Dhaalu Hanimaadhoo.
The President has yet to make a public statement following his defeat.
Massood said that President Waheed’s 'Forward with the Nation Coalition' will issue a public statement soon. He said that support for Waheed was small compared to his service as President, during the past one and a half years.
“I believe that President Waheed did a lot more, and much better service to the country within the past one and a half year, compared to Nasheed. I personally believe that a better result could have been achieved. He has established sewerage systems and airports in so many islands [compared to former president Mohamed Nasheed],” Massood said.
