Nasheed is not a choice, says PPM running mate

Running mate of the presidential candidate of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, has said that presidential candidate of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), is ‘not a choice’.

Speaking to reporters in a press conference Nasandhura Palace Hotel yesterday evening, Dr Jameel said that the result of the presidential election votes has shown that the people of the Maldives ‘do not want Nasheed’.

He said that Nasheed, during his presidency, arrested judges and senior politicians, harmed them, sent them to prison, and treated people inhumanly; and that he tried to destroy the country’s democracy.

He highlighted that there is a court case against Nasheed regarding his illegal acts, and said that if the trial had proceeded, Nasheed would not have been able to contest in the presidential election.

Dr Jameel said that Nasheed never worked for the benefit of the country, and that his efforts in the past have always been targeted at becoming president.

He said that Nasheed is a threat to local businesses as well as foreign investors in the Maldives.

“The people of Maldives know that Nasheed does not work for the benefit of the country. He never worked to bring about advantages for the investments in the Maldives. He tried to obstruct all businesses here. He wanted to come to power, even if it meant that he had to increase taxes and make things difficult for the citizens. He never worked for the benefit of the people when he was president. He is also a threat to businesses,” he said.
