Polling ends, counting of votes begins

Summary
The first round of the second multi-party presidential election will take place in the Maldives today, Saturday, 7 September, 2013. A total of 239,593 eligible voters will cast their votes into 470 ballot boxes placed in the Maldives and overseas, including India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, the UK and Singapore. The four candidates contesting in this election are presidential candidate of Jumhooree Party (JP), Gasim Ibrahim; independent presidential candidate, Dr Mohamed Waheed; presidential candidate of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Abdullah Yameen; and presidential candidate of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Mohamed Nasheed. The Elections Commission of the Maldives has assured that the election will be transparent, free and fair. Delegations from the United Nations, the Commonwealth, the European Union and India have arrived in the Maldives over the past few weeks to observe the election. This includes a high-level Indian delegation including three former Election Commissioners, which arrived on 2 September. The Indian High Commission in the Maldives has said that the team is visiting the Maldives on the invitation of the Elections Commission of the Maldives, and would undertake visits to a number of polling stations in different islands. Similarly, a 17-member Commonwealth Observer Group constituted by the Commonwealth Secretary-General will be stationed in nine locations across the country to observe the election. Chair of the Commonwealth Observer Group to the Maldives, former prime minister of Malta, Dr Lawrence Gonzi, in a statement earlier, urged all Maldivians to do their part to ensure that a peaceful and credible election takes place on Saturday. Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon has also called on all candidates to respect the election results, no matter who wins the election on Saturday. According to the Elections Commission, voting will begin at 7:30 am and close at 4:00 pm, and the preliminary results will be announced at 11:00 pm on Saturday. 21:54 An object suspected of being used in black magic was discovered in the polling station in Shaviyani Kanditheemu. Sun Monitor in Shaviyani Kanditheemu Alim Mohamed said that the object was found on top of the wall of the polling station. He said that there were Arabic markings on the object, and that it was structured in the shape of a human being. Alim said that the police were notified of the discovery of the object and that police are active on the scene.
