MDP calls for peaceful elections

Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Reeko Moosa Manik has called on party supporters to ensure smooth and peaceful presidential elections, as the country goes to polls on Saturday.

Speaking at a news conference in MDP office, the party Chairperson also called on all political parties to ensure that the election is conducted peacefully and according to democratic principles.

“To our rivals, we would like to tell them to carry on according to democratic principles,” Moosa Manik said.

He assured that the MDP leadership will make every effort to ensure that the election is peaceful.

His party has full confidence in the Election Commission, the MDP Chairperson said, and stated that no party can produce a desired result without vesting confidence in the Commission.

He also noted that MDP faced obstructions during their campaign trips to the islands, and accused the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) of trying to actively to block their campaigns this year.

Moosa Manik said that PPM Spokesperson MP Ahmed Mahloof had assured him that PPM would not obstruct MDP’s campaign.

MP Mahloof was unable for comment at the time of press.
