Contract signed with MTCC for construction of breakwater in two islands

An agreement has been signed between the government and the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) regarding the construction of breakwaters to prevent erosion in Noonu Holhudhoo and Raa Maduvvari.

The agreement was signed at a ceremony held in the Ministry of Environment today, by Minister of State for Environment Abdul Matheen and Chief Financial Officer of MTCC Mohamed Hilmy.

The Ministry of Environment and Energy said that the cost of the project to construct a 2,678-foot breakwater in Holhudhoo is approximately MVR 28 million, while the cost of the project to construct a 2,919-foot breakwater in Maduvvari is approximately MVR 33 million.

The projects will be implemented as soon as the EIAs are completed, and the projects should be completed within seven months, said the ministry.

In Holhudhoo, two houses on the beach have suffered serious damage due to erosion during sea surges in the past.
