Former president and presidential candidate for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Mohamed Nasheed has said that he will reduce the price of electricity to MVR 2.5 per unit, if he wins the September 7th election.
Nasheed made his statement while speaking at the presidential debate hosted by the Maldives National University (MNU) and Television Maldives (TVM) on the 1st of September. Renewable energy is the key to reducing the price to electricity, he said.
“There are a number of projects in the Maldives right now. In our first two years, God willing, we will reduce the price of electricity in all those islands with an electricity unit for MVR 7, we will bring it down to MVR 2.5,” the former president said.
Speaking of his education policy, Nasheed said it is important for the island schools to have teachers from those local communities and said that he will provide MVR 500 million in loans for higher education.
Moving to his strategy on improving the economy, Nasheed said that he will increase jobs through introduction of guest house and agriculture businesses and reduce the State deficit.
All of Nasheed's answers for the presidential debate were based on MDP's 2013 - 2018 manifesto.
