Supreme Court annuls Political Party Act clause requiring minimum 10,000 members

Supreme Court has today annulled the clause in the Political Party Act requiring 10,000 signatures to form a political party.

This requirement of 10,000 members is mentioned in Article 11 (a) of the Political Party Act.

The Supreme Court verdict stated that the clause infringes the freedom to form political parties, associations and societies, as granted by Article 30 (a) of the Constitution.

Supreme Court has communicated to the parliament to duly amend the Political Party Act, as per their verdict.

The unanimous verdict by all seven Supreme Court judges also stated that a minimum of 3,000 signatures will be required to form a political party, the same number of members required before the new Political Party Act, which was ratified in March this year.
