President Dr Mohamed Waheed has inaugurated the road construction project in Gaafu Alifu Villingili.
Speaking at a ceremony held at 9:00 am today, the president said that the road construction project can be completed without interruption.
He said that 15 roads of 6 km will be constructed under this project, and a new project will be launched afterwards to construct the remaining roads.
He said that the road construction project in Villingili continues at a fast speed because the island council cooperates with the government, and thanked Council President Saud Hussain and all members of the island council.
He said that the government’s aim is to construct roads in all islands, but they often have to ‘fight’ in order to construct roads in some islands.
He said that some island councils do not assist the government in its efforts to construct roads in those islands, but the people of those islands nonetheless support the government.
He said that therefore, the government will not hesitate in its efforts and proceed to construct roads in needed islands with the support of the people.
“We will not hesitate in our efforts to serve the people. We will construct roads where roads are necessary. We will work with the people in doing so. Even though the councils refuse to assist us, the people are with us. So we will do everything necessary with the people, for the benefit of the people,” he said.
After inaugurating the road construction project, President Waheed laid the foundation stone for the six-classroom building in Gaafu Atoll Education Centre.
