HRCM calls to refrain from campaign activities that might disturb schools

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has advised political parties to refrain from campaign activities that might disturb students while in school.

HRCM said in a statement published today that there have been complaints by civilians and schools recently, regarding loud noise coming from campaign halls.

“As exams are ongoing in schools, the commission calls on all groups working to gain support prior to this election to refrain from all activities that might disturb students in their studies,” said HRCM in its statement.

Political parties have set up campaign halls in Male’ and the islands, and complaints have been filed to the police by members of the public regarding some adjacent campaign halls competing with one another on who can play louder music.

Article 11 of the Anti-Social Behaviour Act states that playing loud music, turning up the TV volume or creating any other loud noise might disturb neighbours is a punishable offence.

However, loud music can be played at functions after seeking permission from the relevant government authority.
