A project worth MVR 4.5 million to install runway lights at Fuvahmulah Airport has been awarded to a Sri Lankan company.
Managing Director of Fuvahmulah airport operator State Trading Organisation (STO) Shahid Ali said that the project will be implemented very soon.
“Some lights to be installed have already been sent to the island, and the remaining lights have also been shipped to the Maldives,” he said.
Fuvahmulah Airport was opened by STO in November 2011.
President Waheed is scheduled to travel to Fuvahmulah tomorrow to officially inaugurate the light installation project.
Shahid Ali said that the installation of lights is likely to be completed in about three months, after which it will be possible for planes to land in Fuvahmulah Airport in the night.
“Once the installation of lights is completed, we will conduct a test flight. After that we will commence schedule flights in the night,” he said.
At the moment, Fuvahmulah Airport is the only airport in the Maldives where it is not possible for planes to land in the night.
