Commissioner of Police Abdulla Riyaz has stated that the testimony of Hussain Humaam Ahmed of H. Lobby, in which he had confessed to the murder former Ungoofaaru MP and prominent religious scholar Dr. Afrasheem Ali, was obtained through legal means.
Rebutting Humaam’s recent statements in court that he was threatened by the Police and forced to confess, Commissioner Riyaz told the press through an interview to the police media that Humaam’s state would become apparent once the video of his confession statement is presented to court.
He also stated that during the hearings, Humaam had been largely inconsistent in his comments against the Police and that it is illogical to believe that he would hesitate to try and tarnish the good faith of the Maldives Police Service.
Commissioner Riyaz went on to assure that the Police communicates with everyone, including suspects, with due respect and that all those who are brought in for questioning are provided with a lawyer if so demanded. He said as such, the investigation of Humaam was also carried out without any unlawful acts against him.
The Commissioner also said that even though Humaam retracted his confession during trial, he believes that the investigation has gathered enough evidence against Humaam, including DNA, video and more than one witnesses’ testimony.
Highlighting the ongoing court proceedings, the Commissioner noted that the trial has already heard statements by Humaam, testimony of 3 witnesses and a testimony by a DNA expert and that he is confident of a conviction. He also said that further evidence by the Police will be provided during a hearing this week.
