Elections Commission has said that more than 50,000 people have re-registered to vote for the 7th September 2013 presidential elections.
All voters who intend to vote from ballot stations other than the stations designated for their permanent addresses are required to re-register for their current stations before the 7th of August 2013.
President of the Elections Commission Fuad Thaufeeq told Sun today that by last night, more than 49,000 people have re-registered and that the number has exceeded 50,000 today.
“More than 49,000 people registered to vote outside their permanent addresses, by last night. Although, the number has exceeded 50,000 today,” Fuad Thaufeeq said.
He said that the commission hopes to see over 65,000 voters re-register this year.
Fuad said that amongst the foreign states which hold large Maldivian populations, states of Colombo, Sri Lanka; Trivandrum India; London, UK and Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, have already exceeded the minimum number re-registrations for the Commission to place a ballot box in that state.
However, he said that Singapore and Delhi, India have not yet received the minimum re-registration number of 100 voters.
Fuad said that Commission will publish the voter’s list on two different occasions before the election. It will first be published on the Commission’s website on the 14th of this month, to allow the public to forward any grievances regarding the list, and the final list will be published, also on the Commission’s website, on the 20th of this month, the EC President said.
“The opportunity to register will close completely by tomorrow. We will publish the voter’s list on two different occasions. As the registration deadline expires tomorrow, the Commission will publish a list on the 14th of this month, on the Commission’s website. The final list will be published on the 20th of this month,” Fuad Thaufeeq said.
