Fifty flats built for police officers have been handed over last night.
The flats were handed over by President Dr Mohamed Waheed, at a ceremony held at Iskandar Koshi.
Speaking at the ceremony, Commissioner of Police Abdullah Riyaz thanked the government for its decision to provide flats to police officers.
He said that a large number of individual police officers face the problem housing, and while there are about 3,500 officers working at Maldives Police Service, there have been no complaints regarding the provision of flats thus far.
“A committee was created especially for this, and this was done transparently; the points given to officers could be accessed and seen by everyone via the police intranet. An efficient system was put in place to check complaints,” he said.
Work is ongoing to construct 300 additional flats in Hulhumale’ for police officers.
The government has also provided 50 flats to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), and decided to provide 300 additional flats to MNDF.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Waheed highlighted the crucial role of police and army officers in maintaining law and order and providing the safety and security of the country. He said that the whole nation should recognize their efforts.
The president urged the police officers to uphold the constitution, and to ensure a smooth and peaceful election.
