Umar Naseer, who lost the primary election of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) to Abdullah Yameen, has finally decided to support Jumhooree Party (JP).
Speaking to the media at Mookai Suites today, Umar said that PPM is currently not being run in line with the ideas of former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, and thus, it was not possible for him to support PPM presidential candidate Abdullah Yameen.
Umar said that he decided to support Gasim because Gasim works against corruption and strife in the society.
Umar was joined in the press conference by PPM council member Maaz Ahmed Saleem, former member of MBC Nahla Ali and several other supporters.
Umar filed a case to Civil Court after the primary, requesting the court to declare the election results void.
He even filed the case for a second time when the court ruled against him the first time.
Umar lost the primary to Yameen by a huge margin.
Umar dissolved his own party, IDP, and joined Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) saying that he ‘sank the small ship boarded the large ship’.
He was removed from DRP following opinion differences with the party’s leadership.
He was later also removed from PPM for similar reasons.
Sun Online has come to know that Umar joined JP on the condition that he is given 15 percent in a JP government.
