Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has said that they will establish a system where both the husband and wife will get their share of the savings and property, in the event of a divorce.
Speaking at a consultation forum to assemble a women's policy for the upcoming election, PPM’s vice presidential candidate Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed said they will propose amendments to the family laws in order to facilitate for both the man and women to pursue their reserved share of the property earned during the marriage, in the event of a divorce.
He said that Maldives currently lacks any legislation to guide such a process.
They have now assembled a draft bill to amend the laws on families, Jameel said, which was put together with reflection on similar such legislation in other Muslim countries.
“We’ve proposed the article such that, we’re suggesting certain things for the courts to consider in terms of the property they have earned as a husband and wife. One such thing is, by who’s efforts it was it earned, how much share was there in the effort, the court will decided after considering these facts,” Jameel said.
He also said that their amendments will ask that the couple’s pending debts to be paid off through the property they have earned together.
In addition, the amendment also asks to consider the property of either the husband or the wife in paying of alimony charges, before it can be shared amongst the family. Although, Jameel said that the party that earned the property will be entitled to a larger share.
Last night’s discussion forum was conducted amongst senior officials and general members of the party.
