The police have arrested Colonel (Rtd) Shaukath Ibrahim last night, over a case where 11.6 kgs of drugs, concealed in a pile of mattresses, were brought into the country on a vessel that came from India.
Sun Online has come to know that the drugs were brought in under the name of Jet India Maldives Investment Company.
Shaukath is one of the shareholders of this company. The other shareholder, Ali Ashraf of Bahaaruge, Raa Rasmaadhoo, was arrested earlier.
It has been confirmed to Sun Online that the court has granted detention periods of 7 days for Shaukath, and 10 days for Ashraf.
Superintendent Abdullah Shareef said in a press conference held by Maldives Customs earlier that 11.6 kgs of drugs were seized from a vessel that arrived from India on 26 June. He said that the vessel left Tuticorin port bound for Male’ on 19 June.
Shareef said that 14 packets of drugs were found in seven mattresses on-board the vessel.
He said that the drugs consisted of 1 kg heroine and 10.6 kg hashish oil, which would have a street value of about MVR 10 million.
