Price of watermelon goes up to MVR 25 per kg

The price of watermelon, one of the most popular fruits consumed during Ramadan, has gone up to MVR 25 per kg.

A major supplier of watermelon from Alif Alif Thoddoo to Male’ said that the price of watermelon reached MVR 25 per kg due to shortages in supply compared to demand, and also because of the high price at which it is supplied to him.

He said that it is not known when the price would go down.

“There is a shortage of watermelon. We are buying it at MVR 23 per kg. This price is a bit high,” he said.

The price of watermelon even at the beginning of Ramadan was MVR 25 per kg. The price went down to MVR 18, but yesterday reached MVR 30 per kg.

The main suppliers of watermelon to the local market at the moment are Thoddoo and Laamu Atoll islands.

An official from Thoddoo Council said that watermelon was being sent in large quantities to Male’ for Ramadan.

He said that 7,000 watermelons are supplied to Male’ daily on average, while 5,000 were supplied today.

He said that 1.8 million sq ft had been leased from the island for the production of watermelon.
