Parliament decides to issue order forcing Nolhivaram Council to grant housing plots

Parliament has passed to issue an order upon Haa Dhaalu Nolhivaram Council, forcing to grant certain housing plots withheld by the council.

Parliament passed to issued the order today, recommended by a report by the Parliament Committee on Oversight of the Government, by a vote 42 in favour, out of the 47 MPs present at the session, with five absentions.

The order was initially requested through a petition signed by 460 residents of Haa Dhaalu Nolhivaram. Presented to the parliament committee by Kulhudhuffushi-North MP Abdul Gafoor Moosa, the petition claims the island’s council to be withholding 172 housing plots that have been allocated, and by right, should be granted to the respective people who had won the plots.

Following a review of the petition’s claims, the report by the government oversight committee states that the former Ministry of Housing and Environment had clearly given permission to the island council to grant the plots to the winners. The report also states that the Nolhivaram Court had issued an order upon the island council in September last year, ordering them allow the plots, and notes another letter from the current Ministry of Housing Infrastructure in February this year, also ordering the council to grant the plots.

The report passed by the parliament today also orders the island council to hand over the 172 plots within 30 days from today.
