ACC to prioritize investigation of corruption cases highlighted in Auditor General

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has started prioritized investigations on the corruptions cases highlighted in the Auditor General’s reports.

ACC Vice President Muavviz Rasheed said today the Auditor General’s reports have been put on the agenda for next week and that the investigations will follow.

“Except the report that was published late last week, we are investigating all other corruption issues highlighted in the reports with a special priority. Some of the reports consist of issues that we have already started investigating,” Muavviz said.

He said that the Commission has already completed investigations on the Auditor General’s reports published on Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Education for 2010 and that two cases relating to the reports, one on illegally printing certain books and another on the import of certain cars, have already been forwarded to the Prosecutor General for prosecution.

“From the recently published reports, we have given special priority to investigate the Education Ministry audit report, especially the different issues recommended for the ACC to investigate. We’re also looking into the issues in the audit reports that followed,” Muavviz said.

He said that it was the responsibility of the Ministry of Finance and Treasury to take action regarding the issues that involves breaches of the Public Finance Act and that civil cases have to be taken up by the Attorney General and the Finance Ministry.

“I’ll have to say that Finance has also been incapable of taking the proper action regarding these issues. Attorney General too has not been able put enough effort in civil compensation cases. There is an accumulation of a large sum of money that the government has not regained, because of this,” Muavviz said.
