President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said that a renowned university from the UK will be established in Addu.
Speaking at a function held by his coalition ‘Forward with the Nation’ in Addu City last night, President Waheed said that the Equatorial Convention Centre (ECC) will be provided for the operation of the university.
“The convention centre will be transformed accordingly, and a UK university will be established in this city soon,” he said.
He further said that the construction of a 100-bed hospital in Hithadhoo will also commence soon, and that it had been decided to hand over the operation of Herethere to a new group.
The president went on to say that the construction of 300 housing units in Addu will commence in July, and that it had been decided to reclaim 70 hectares of land in Addu, which will be done by the company reclaiming land for Gan Airport. He said that Gan Airport, which will be completed soon, is the pivot of Addu’s development.
President Waheed said that efforts will also be made to establish a tranship port in Addu.
He said that Maldivians do not wish to return to the situation of the past 3 or 30 years, and thus, the country is in need of change. He said that the Maldivian nation does not belong to any one group of people.
