Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has temporarily ceased the ferry service between Male’ and Hulhumale’ due to current strong winds and roughs seas.
MTCC’s Head of Transport Ismail Faariq told Sun today that they have temporarily ceased the service and that the Coast Guard has also issued a warning against sea travel.
“We have not been able to stick to the schedule since 1:30 this afternoon, so the trips have been halted. The island’s (Hulhumale’) harbour is very rough,” Ismail Faariq said.
He said that the company’s services to the island of Vilimale’, part of the capital to the West, is still ongoing. He said that the sea near the entrance to Vilimale’ lagoon is also very rough and that it is causing great difficulty.
MTCC has not stated when the Hulhumale’ ferry service will be resumed.
Some tents set up for the Night Market in Male’ were also destroyed last night due to strong winds.
Coast Guard has issued a public warning to refrain from taking up sea travel and to stay on dry land. Met Office has also issued a Yellow Alert, advising the public to refrain from sea travel.
