Intoxicants discovered in newborn, police moves to prosecute the mother

Police have asked the Prosecutor General (PG) to prosecute a young woman after they discovered intoxicants form the blood of her newborn child.

Police said that the case was forwarded against Haula Mohamed, 23, Saimaage, Kaafu Guraidhoo, alleging that the intoxicant discovered in the blood of her infant child had entered into the child’s body through Haula Mohamed's negligence.

Haula Mohamed gave birth in Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) on the 21st of last month. Police say that tests on the baby’s blood had shown that it contained the drug Benzodiazepine.

Police did not reveal any information regarding the condition of the baby.

The case was forwarded for prosecution on the 30th of last month.
