The High Court has ruled that the detention period of a suspect of the murder of Mohamed Hassan, 51, was extended according to procedure.
Mohamed Hassan died after being attacked in the head with a sharp object while he was sleeping.
This ruling came on Sunday in relation to the case appealed by suspect Ahmed Niyaz, regarding the extension of his detention period by 15 days.
The Criminal Court extended his detention period based on the argument that if he is released, he may attempt to hide or destroy evidence, and also may be exposed to threats from other groups.
Lawyer representing Niyaz in court, Mohamed Shah told Sun Online that the High Court ruling will be appealed in Supreme Court.
In addition to Niyaz, police also arrested Fathimath Ahmed, 40, Hussain Waheed, 24, and Hussain Niyaz, 25, in relation to the murder of Mohamed Hassan.
Mohamed Hassan suffered four serious head injuries including fractures due to the attack in a house in Thundi district in Laamu Gan on 13 March 2013.
He was first taken to Gan Regional Hospital, where officials said that he was bleeding from the mouth and nose, and had extremely low blood pressure.
He was unconscious and breathing through a ventilator when he was taken to Male’ for further treatment.
He died at 23:25 on 14 May while being treated in the ICU at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital.
